Your First AmigoUp Meetup: What to Expect

Nervous about going to a meetup alone? Here is exactly what happens at your first AmigoUp event in Barcelona, and how to join the community after.

Walking into a room full of strangers can feel intimidating โ€” even for confident people. The good news is that at an AmigoUp event, almost everyone else has done exactly the same thing. Here's what to expect at your first meetup, so you can turn up relaxed.

Before the event

Pick an easy first event

Coffee meetups and social nights are ideal first events because they're built around chatting. Sports events are great too โ€” the activity gives you something to talk about straight away. Browse our upcoming events and pick whatever sounds fun.

RSVP on Meetup

All public AmigoUp events are listed on our Meetup.com group. RSVPing helps us plan numbers (and book enough tables), and you'll get a reminder with the exact location. For casual events you can also just show up.

Coming alone? Perfect.

Most people at our events came alone the first time. Honestly, coming solo often works better โ€” you're more likely to chat to new people than if you stick with a friend all night.

When you arrive

Look out for the organiser โ€” the event description on Meetup will tell you how to find the group. They'll say hi, introduce you to a few people and help you settle in. Nobody gets left standing in a corner.

Conversations usually start with the classics: Where are you from? How long have you been in Barcelona? What brought you here? Everyone has a story, and the mix of nationalities means there's always something interesting to hear.

What the vibe is like

  • Friendly, not networking. Nobody is selling anything. People are just there to meet people.
  • English is the common language. You'll hear lots of other languages too, but everyone switches to English to include the group.
  • Low pressure. Stay for the whole event or pop in for half an hour โ€” both are fine.
  • Respectful. We have a zero-tolerance approach to harassment and anyone making others uncomfortable.

After the event: joining the community

This is where AmigoUp gets really good. After your first event you can join our members' spaces:

  1. Linkdful โ€” our members' hub, with full event details, photos from past meetups and community discussions. Request your invite here.
  2. WhatsApp community โ€” once you're in, you can join the WhatsApp subgroups for spontaneous plans, recommendations and general chat. See the FAQ for how subgroups work.

Many of our members' best friendships started with a "who's up for the beach tomorrow?" message in the group.

Once you're a member you can also host your own events on Linkdful โ€” a padel game, a picnic, a dinner โ€” and other members can RSVP. Our member events guide shows how.

Quick tips for your first time

  • Arrive on time or a little early โ€” it's easier to join a small group than a big one.
  • Ask open questions and remember a name or two.
  • Swap numbers or join the community chat before you leave.
  • Come back the following week. The second event is always easier than the first.
