12 Free Things to Do in Barcelona with Friends

Sunset viewpoints, beach days, park picnics and festivals — the best free activities in Barcelona to enjoy with new friends.

Barcelona doesn't have to be expensive. Some of the best moments in the city cost nothing at all — especially when you share them with good company. Here are our favourite free things to do in Barcelona with friends (old or brand new).

1. Watch the sunset from the Bunkers del Carmel

The old anti-aircraft battery on Turó de la Rovira offers a 360° view over the whole city, from the Sagrada Família to the sea. It's a short, steep walk up. Bring snacks, arrive before golden hour and please respect the neighbours — access hours have been restricted in recent years, so check before you go.

2. Have a picnic in Parc de la Ciutadella

Barcelona's central park has the grand Cascada fountain, a boating lake and plenty of shady grass. On weekends you'll find jugglers, musicians and slackliners — it's an easy, low-key place to hang out with a group.

3. Spend a day at the beach

Barceloneta is the most famous beach, but it gets crowded. Walk a little further north to Bogatell or Nova Icària for more space, beach volleyball nets and a calmer vibe.

4. Walk the Carretera de les Aigües

This mostly flat gravel path runs along the side of Collserola hill with views over the whole city. It's popular with runners and cyclists, and a lovely way to get out of the city without leaving it.

5. Hike up to Montjuïc

Montjuïc hill is full of gardens, viewpoints and Olympic history. Wander up from Plaça d'Espanya, explore the gardens and catch the view over the port. On some evenings the Magic Fountain puts on a free light and music show — check the current schedule first.

6. Get lost in the Gothic Quarter and El Born

The narrow medieval streets of the Barri Gòtic and El Born are made for wandering. Look out for the Roman walls, hidden squares like Plaça de Sant Felip Neri and the beautiful Santa Maria del Mar church.

7. Visit museums on free days

Many Barcelona museums offer free entry at certain times — often on the first Sunday of the month or on Sunday afternoons. Rules differ by museum and change over time, so check each museum's website before you plan a culture day.

8. Go to a neighbourhood festa major

Each barri has its own festival with concerts, decorated streets and castellers (human towers). The Festa Major de Gràcia in August, where whole streets compete for the best decorations, is a highlight.

9. Celebrate La Mercè

Barcelona's biggest city festival takes place in late September, with free outdoor concerts, fire runs (correfocs), giants and fireworks across the city.

10. Browse a local market

Skip the tourist crush and explore a neighbourhood market like Santa Caterina or Sant Antoni. Browsing is free — though you'll probably be tempted by the fruit stands.

11. Celebrate Sant Jordi

On 23 April, Barcelona's streets fill with book and rose stalls for Catalonia's version of Valentine's Day. Wandering Passeig de Gràcia and the Rambla de Catalunya on Sant Jordi is one of the city's most charming free experiences.

12. Join a free community meetup

Of course, the easiest way to find people to do all of this with is to join a community. AmigoUp runs free or low-cost events every single week — from sunset walks and beach days to coffee meetups and quiz nights.

Check out our upcoming events and come along — you can absolutely come on your own.
